Dominion of the air RUB historian investigates Lufthansa’s history From secret armament agency to profitable airline The history of German air traffic is closely interwoven with the history of the “Lufthansa” enterprise. That history went hand in hand with armament interests, and had close ties to the NS regime and forced labour. At least before the corporation reinvented itself in 1955. RUB historian Dr Lutz Budrass investigated the enterprise’s history; he was initially commissioned by Lufthansa, which, however, subsequently decided not to have the results published. The RUB’s science magazine “RUBIN” tells the story. In need of financial aid: armament and support by the NS regime Today, Lufthansa has only one objective: running profitable air traffic operations. It does not play in industrial side venues. This has not always been the case. “In the 1920s and 1930s, the corporation operated like a secret armament agency, guided by the government,” says Lutz Budrass. That was because the enterprise was not profitable enough without a second core competence. During the Great Depression of 1929, there were talks of cancelling governmental subsidies for aviation companies. As a result, Lufthansa executives soon established ties to the National Socialist regime, in order to obtain support for the air traffic business. Erhard Milch, Technical Director at Lufthansa, worked closely with Hermann Göring, the deputy leader of the National Socialist Party. Children in forced labour During the Second World War, Lufthansa made use of many forced labourers. “That wasn’t anything out of the ordinary,” says Budrass. “But in order to repair planes, one had to crawl into nooks and crannies. Therefore, there was a great demand for small people.” Accordingly, forced labourers were very often children. When air armament was at its peak in the early 1940s, 1.9 million people were employed in the aviation industry in Germany. In 1945, however, success came to an abrupt end because the Allies ruled that German pilots were no longer allowed to fly. The Lufthansa company was closed down. “Impressive lessons from history” On May 5, 1955 Lufthansa was officially relaunched. Ever since then, the enterprise has been consistently guided by three principles: it never again wants to be the sales market for the German aviation industry alone. The number of people in the Federal Department of Transportation, who have the right to regulate Lufthansa, and hence the political influence on the company have been kept at a minimum from the very beginning. Since its foundation, the corporation has insisted on being independent from government subsidies in the long term. Today, Lufthansa is fully privatised. Lutz Budrass believes that new Lufthansa’s corporate policy can only be explained if its past is understood. The corporation has learned impressive lessons from its history. According to the RUB historian, it is a pity that it does not want to have anything to do with its fascinating past. Budrass concludes: “I’d happily fly with Lufthansa any time.”

Dead pig addressed to Merkel found on building site of Leipzig mosque
Dead pig addressed to Merkel found on building site of Leipzig mosque
A dead pig with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s name smeared onto it was found on the building site of a mosque in Leipzig, police said on Thursday.
An investigation has been launched into the matter and police said they are treating the act in the eastern German city as politically motivated.
The words “Mutti Merkel” were scrawled onto the carcass in red paint, police said. “Mutti” is the German word for “mum” and is often used to refer to the German leader.
Merkel has come up against scorn from right-wing, Islamophobic groups over her decision to allow 1.1 million migrants - many of them refugees fleeing war in the Middle East - into the country in 2015.
This is not the first time that the site in Leipzig has been targeted. In 2013, the severed heads of five pigs were found there after weeks of protests against the construction of the mosque, which will have minarets.
Leipzig is situated in the eastern state of Saxony, where a recent spike in xenophobic attacks against migrants and refugees has prompted concern at a national level.

Pesticide linked to cancer found in top German beers
Pesticide linked to cancer found in top German beers

The Environmental Institute in Munich conducted the tests on the 14 beers with the highest sales figures in Germany and found that all of them contained traces of the pesticide. The results showed that Hasseröder, a brewery in Saxony-Anhalt, had the highest intensity of the pesticide – with 29.74 microgrammes of the chemical per litre of beer. The lowest levels on the other hand were to be found in the Bavarian Augustiner beers, which had a comparatively low 0.46 microgrammes of the pesticide in every litre of its amber brew. But even this quantity is over four times the legal limit for drinking water which is set at 0.1 microgrammes per litre, Spiegel reports. Coming in the year of the much celebrated 500th anniversary of the famed Beer Purity Law, the results couldn’t be worse timed, and could tarnish German beer’s worldwide reputation for quality as well as taste. But the Association of German Brewers (BfR) denied on Thursday that the reported figures posed any risk to people’s health. While saying that it had not seen the results of the testing, the BfR claimed that the reported levels of the pesticide lie well below what is currently considered to pose a health risk. “For an adult to consume unhealthy amounts of Glyphosate, he would have to drink around 1,000 litres of beer a day,” the BfR said in a statement. “According to current scientific understanding, a Glyphosate level of 30 micrograms per litre doesn’t pose any health risk,” they continued. Fierce scientific debate Debate is currently raging among health experts as to whether Glyphosate, made by controversial American agrochemical giant Monsanto, is safe to use. In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) labelled Glyphosate “potentially carcinogenic.” But the EU food safety authority Efsa came to a different conclusion, announcing it was “unlikely that Glyphosate poses a cancer risk to humans” – a conclusion which some researchers described as “scientifically unacceptable.” With Monsanto’s licence to sell the pesticide running out in the summer, the European Commission will have to once again consider whether the product is safe for use in the EU. The Environmental Institute in Munich say that the chemical could have been carried into the beer through hops or the cereals which are part of the ingredients, pointing out that “large scale use of Glyphosate is a daily part of crop production” in Germany. The breweries must now look into “how Glyphosate could make it into their beer and to make sure that in the future their products are free from traces of pesticide,” the institute warns. The beers which were tested were on sale in German supermarkets in December 2015 and January 2016.
